This is a joint used for the legs of furniture. The peg has wings at the bottom that close slightly to allow it to be inserted into a hole in another piece of wood.  Once inside, the wings open and produce a tight grip. If the furniture maker used such a joint for table legs, Leonardo promised, the legs would never become detached.
